Appearance
Which do you like?
Hardwood floor grading rules are provided in order to quantify the appearance of the floor. While all hardwood floors are natural products and will demonstrate the variation associated with a natural product, grading rules define how many natural characteristics are allowed in the floor. Regardless of the grade you choose, your Canterbury wood floor will be a serviceable and structurally sound long lasting investment.

Canterbury sells first quality flooring in your choice of grades
  • Clear Limited to exotic species, clear grade offers the most uniform appearance and is virtually free of natural defect. Color variation will be less than in a Select grade floor, but is species dependant.

  • Select & Better Select is the highest grade of flooring in domestic species and the lowest grade in most exotics. The natural variation in color of the species will be evident, as well as small natural defects, limited mineral streaking, and minor milling defects that do not affect usability or appearance.

  • Character & Better Character & Better flooring is our most popular grade and includes the complete range of characteristics found in nature. Character grade flooring includes everything allowed in the upper range of a NOFMA #2 Common, all of the #1 Common, and Select & Better. At least 33% of the installed square footage will demonstrate the characteristics of a Select & Better floor. Character flooring will include knots, wormholes, mineral streaking, and minor milling defects that do not affect installation. Character grade floors have the longest average length of any product we manufacture and are significantly longer than traditional #1 and #2 Common grade floors.

Grading rules vary slightly from species to species. Consult your retailer or Canterbury Flooring for questions related to your specific grading needs.

Custom grades are available on request.
